Lipopolysaccharide binding protein
Active
Descriptions
Lipopolysaccharide binding proteins (LBP) are encoded by the LBP gene [NCBI Gene ID:3929] and involved in the acute-phase immunologic response to gram negative bacterial infections. PMID: 8432532 LBP mediates the binding of lipopolysaccharides (LPS) to the CD14 receptor, triggering a pro-inflammatory response of macrophages, which is thought to be crucial for keeping infections under control. PMID: 10725789 Elevated LBP serum concentrations therefore is a potential marker for early diagnosis of an invasive bacterial infection. PMID: 17259880 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Lipopolysaccharide binding protein (LBP) is an acute phase reactant that is constantly being produced by hepatocytes to maintain a plasma level of 5-15 ug/mL. When an acute phase response is initiated, interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) are released by monocytes and macrophages and together induce the synthesis of large amounts of LBP, raising its plasma concentration to 200 ug/mL. When gram-negative bacterial infection occurs, the innate immune system recognizes the glycolipid outer membrane of the bacteria called lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LBP strongly binds to LPS and transfers it to the cellular LPS receptor made up of CD14 and Toll-like receptor-4. [http://www.bloodjournal.org/content/bloodjournal/98/13/3800.full.pdf?sso-checked=true] The presence of LBP with low concentrations of LPS speeds up the release of cytokines earlier in the infection process. The main role of LBP is to initiate an inflammatory response even when the level of LPS is still low. Another way that LBP is important is that it catalyzes the movement of LPS to aggregates of high density lipoprotein particles which neutralize LPS.[https://www.mesoscale.com/~/media/files/product%20inserts/human%20lbp.pdf] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
