Fibroblast growth factor 21.intact
Active
Description
Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is a member of the fibroblast growth factor family of proteins, which are involved in physiologic processes including cell growth and differentiation, and embryonic development. FGF21 is involved in energy regulation and has been associated with weight loss and decreased triglyceride accumulation in the liver. In humans, fructose ingestion has been associated with an increase in circulating FGF21, and obesity may lead to FGF21 resistance. In contrast, in animal studies, increased levels of FGF21 have been found with fasting and ketogenic diets. The N-terminus of FGF21 binds to the FGF receptor and the C-terminus binds to a co-receptor; therefore, the intact form of FGF21 must be present for FGF receptor activation because binding at both sites is required.
