Version 2.77

Description

P and P super little k (Pk) antigens are expressed on almost all red blood cells. The Pk antigen is the precursor to the globotype glycosphingolipids and consists of a terminal galactose that is added to α 1,4 galactosyltransferase 1. The P antigen is formed when β 1,3 N-acetylgalactosaminyltransferase I adds β->3 N-acetylgalactosamine to the terminal galactose of Pk. The P1 antigen belongs to the neolacto family of glycosphingolipids rather than the globo family to which P and Pk antigens belong. The P1 or P2 phenotype is expressed on over 99% of donor red cells. Both P1 and P2 synthesize P and Pk and vary only in the expression of the P1 antigen. P1 phenotype is (P1+) and P2 phenotype is (P1-). The two rare null phenotypes are the Pk and little p phenotypes. The Pk phenotype is missing the P antigen and the little p phenotype is missing both the P and the Pk antigens.[AABB Technical Manual, 18th edition, pp309-311] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
