Helicobacter pylori 23S rRNA clarithromycin resistance mutation
Active
Description
Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) are gram-negative bacterium usually found in the stomach. To treat for H.pylori infections, antibiotics such as clarithromycin/metronidazole or clarithromycin/amoxicillin are given. H.pylori is known to be resistant to clarithromycin due to decreased binding of the antibiotic to the bacterial ribosome. The insufficient binding is caused by point mutations within the 23S rRNA peptidyl transferase -encoding region. Three major variants (A2143G, A2142G and A2142C) in two adjacent position on the 23S rRNA gene are most commonly associated with clarithromycin resistance. The A2143G variant is most frequently reported, whereas variants A2142G and A2142C are less common. Various molecular assays have been developed to detect CLR resistance in H. pylori isolates in both gastric biopsy and stool specimens. PMID: 27436390 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
