Monocyte distribution width
Active
Description
Monocyte distribution width (MDW) is the measure of a change in the size distribution of circulating monocytes. An increase in the MDW may be an early indicator of sepsis. An early diagnosis of sepsis in patients has been a challenge, with the time to diagnosis often being more than 8 hours after the patient arrives in the ED. An elevated white blood cell (WBC) count is not a specific marker for sepsis, and a better measure may be the WBC in conjunction with the MDW, because monocytes are early responders to pathogenic organisms and their immune response causes them to increase in size. Some indications reduce the efficacy of the MDW in helping to diagnose sepsis and include vitamin deficiencies, primary bone marrow disorders, some drugs that lead to macrocytosis, and immune suppressed individuals and more.[https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0012369217310723?via%3Dihub] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
