Description

Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus is one of thirteen species of dust mites that are found in temperate climates worldwide, and is a major source of mite allergen. The three most common dust mites include Dermatophagoides farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Euroglyphus maynei. Dust mites feed on skin scales and other organic debris. Their feces and bodies are the source of many of the allergens that affect humans. House dust mite allergens are divided into 13 groups that are based on their biochemical structure, sequence homology, and molecular weight. Each allergen is designated by the first three letters of the genus of house mite with which it is associated, then the first letter of the species name, and finally a number that indicates the order in which the allergen was isolated. Group 1 allergens are glycoproteins that originally lined the intestinal tract of the mite and possess cysteine protease activity. The epitope Der p 1 increases allergenicity by its ability to split both the CD23 IgE receptor found on the membrane of human B cells, and the CD25 subunit of the T-cell IL-2 receptor.
