Description

The European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT) risk score is used to quickly determine the likelihood of favorable outcomes for an individual considering stem cell transplantation. The score is based on five factors related to the patient and the possible donor and include: age of the patient, stage of the disease, time from diagnosis, donor type and donor recipient gender combination. The possible scores range from 0-7, with worsening transplant outcomes as the risk score increases. The EBMT risk score remains valid for all acquired hematological disorders, for allogeneic and autologous HSCT (score 0-5), and is not influenced by the type of technology used or by standard or reduced conditioning. Stem cell transplantation is invariably less successful in older patients with advanced disease, longer time since diagnosis, and with a mismatched donor, than in younger patients who received their transplant quickly while their disease was at an early stage and using a well-matched donor. The EBMT risk score gives patients a better idea of the likelihood of surviving a HSCT, giving them the choice of other non-transplant options. PMID: 21643021 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
