Babesia sp 18S
Active
Description
A fragment of the 18S rRNA gene specific to Babesia species is commonly targeted to detect and identify Babesia in human or animal specimens. Babesia are intraerythrocytic protozoan parasites transmitted by ticks and cause babesiosis, an infection with mild to moderate symptoms, including fever, fatigue, chills, sweats, headache, myalgia, anorexia cough, arthralgia and nausea. Patients with severe babesiosis can have respiratory failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, congestive heart failure, liver and renal failure, and splenic infarction. Severe symptoms typically only occur in patients who are immunosuppressed due to infections like Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and conditions such as cancer.
