Acute kidney injury risk
Active
Description
Acute kidney injury (AKI), formerly known as acute renal failure, describes the rapid loss of the kidney's ability to excrete urine. Decreased urine output, elevated blood levels of the nitrogen metabolic products urea nitrogen and creatinine, and the accumulation in the blood of metabolic acids including potassium and phosphates, are symptoms of and factors used to diagnose AKI. The incidence of AKI is especially high in critically ill patients who often have comorbidities. Treatment is only supportive. The discovery of biomarkers related to AKI have sparked hope that AKI, including insulin-like growth factor binding protein 7 (IGFBP-7) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 2 (TIMP-2), may help with earlier diagnosis of AKI.
