Insulin.intact
Active
Description
Intact insulin contains two chains (A and B) connected by disulfide bonds. Intact insulin molecules as well as fragments of insulin and proinsulin (precursor to insulin) exist in patient specimens. Measurement of intact insulin levels only is preferred since they are a direct measurement of biologically active and potentially dangerous levels instead of its inactive degraded pieces. An overdose of insulin will cause hypoglycemic symptoms and may lead to unconsciousness, seizures, and even death. PMID: 11216004 PMID: 26820765 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
