Description

The B lymphocytes that are CD27+IgD+IgM+, also known as non-switched memory B cells, are lymphocytes whose function and origin in normal patients is unresolved. They are described as non-switched because they are IgD+IgM+ and as memory cells because they are CD27+. This subset of B cells has been found to be reduced in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Increased levels of autoantibodies associated with SLE including ANA, anti-dsDNA and anti-ENA Ab correlate with a decreased level of CD27+IgD+IgM+ B lymphocytes. Studies have also shown that CD27+IgD+IgM+ B lymphocytes exhibit increased auto-reactivity and activation functionality.
