Description

Veterinary medicine:
Mycoplasma suis is an organism that lacks a cell wall and is unable to be cultured in vitro. It is the causative agent of porcine eperythrozoonosis or infectious anemia. It attaches to the red blood cells of pigs by adhesion, then invades them, forages nutrients, causes immune-mediated lysis, and finally induces eryptosis, or suicidal death of the cell. PMID: 16910766 Infection of M suis can be devastating to pig growers and cause huge economic loss. M suis infections occur worldwide and cause acute or chronic hemolytic anemia, growth retardation in feeder pigs, and poor reproduction in sows. M suis is suspected to be transmitted by mosquitoes, biting flies, and the hog louse. Other modes of transmission include contaminated surgical instruments such as castration knives, and needles used repeatedly during vaccination.https://vetmed.iastate.edu/vdpam/FSVD/swine/index-diseases/mycoplasma-suis Because M suis cannot be cultured in vitro, there is little knowledge of its biology and pathogenicity.
