Description
Suppression of tumorigenicity 2 (ST2) is a member of the interleukin 1 receptor family. It was discovered in 1989, but in 2002 it was realized that ST2 was excreted by cardiac fibroblasts and cardiomyocytes in response to stress. ST2 has two isoforms which are the transmembrane form (ST2L) and the soluble form (sST2). They both bind to the ligand Interleukin-33 (IL-33). When IL-33 binds to ST2L, the complex provides cardiac protection by reducing myocardial fibrosis, cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, apoptosis, and improving myocardial function. When cardiac injury occurs, the IL-33/ST2 system is upregulated in cardiomyocytes and fibroblasts. sST2 becomes strongly attracted to IL-33, competing with ST2L for binding sites. The IL-33/sST2 system counteracts the cardiac protection provided by the IL-33/ST2L system. sST2 concentrations are believed to be associated with cardiovascular stress and fibrosis. As a biomarker, sST2 is a strong predictor of both chronic and acute heart failure outcomes. sST2 does not appear to be significantly affected by age, gender, body mass index, and renal function.
