Cholesterol.in LDL.small dense
Active
Description
Small dense low-density lipoprotein (sdLDL) is a significant marker used to predict cardiovascular disease (CVD). sdLDL remains in the circulation longer than larger LDL particles, which increases its likelihood of modification including desialylation, glycation, and oxidation that enhance its atherogenicity. The small size of sdLDL increases its ability to penetrate atrial walls, where its cholesterol is used in the development of atherosclerotic plaques. In addition to sdLDL being associated with CVD, it has also been linked to dyslipidemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and chronic kidney disease. Though statins are used to lower sdLDL in many patients, no study has clearly shown them to be efficient at doing so. This may in part be related to the many dissimilarities in sdLDL test methods.
