Version 2.78

Description

Oxcarbazepine is used as an adjunctive therapy for treatment of partial seizures in patients with epilepsy. It works by lowering the level of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Oxcarbazepine is also used to treat bipolar disorders. 10-monohydroxy derivative (MHD) is the primary active metabolite of oxcarbazepine. MHD is used to monitor oxcarbazepine therapy because it reaches peak plasma concentration in 4-6 hours and does not undergo significant metabolism, compared to oxcarbazepine, which has a half-life of 1-2 hours.
