Version 2.78

Description

Cell cycle DNA analysis is used to quantify the number of cells in various phases of the cell cycle. Tumor cell cycle analysis can be used to assess the proliferative potential of the tumor, which in some types of cancer can be used as a prognostic indicator. G0 is a quiescent phase during which cells are metabolically active but no longer proliferate unless called on to do so by appropriate extracellular signals. The G1 phase is the interval between mitosis and start of DNA replication during which the cell is metabolically active and continuously grows but does not replicate its DNA. G1 is followed by the S phase, during which DNA replication occurs. G2 follows S, and during G2 the cell continues to grow and synthesize proteins in preparation for mitosis. The M phase of the cycle corresponds to mitosis, during which the cell divides. [NCBI Books: NBK9876] Source: Regenstrief LOINC, NCBI Books: NBK9876
