Pregnancy associated plasma protein A (PAPPA), also known as pappalysin 1, is used in screening for Down syndrome and other fetal disorders. Source: Regenstrief Institute
Pregnancy-associated plasma protein A (PAPP-A), an important pregnancy protein is a major biochemical marker of Down syndrome in the first trimester of pregnancy. The gene of PAPP-A is assigned to human chromosome 9q 33.1. PAPP-A belongs to the metzincin superfamily of metalloproteinases. Maternal serum levels of PAPP-A in the first trimester are significantly lower if the fetus is affected by Down syndrome. Low first trimester maternal serum levels are found not only in trisomy 21 but also in non-Down syndrome fetal aneuploidies. PAPP-A may also be an indicator of stable and unstable angina pectoris.
