The macula is the portion of the retina responsible for central vision on which visual images are focused by the lens. It is located near the center of the retina, within the temporal retinal vascular arcades on the temporal side of the optic nerve. The macula is the most sensitive part of the retina and is important for visual perception and reading. The macula is subject to diseases such as macular degeneration.
