Activated neutrophils are tested for ability to phagocytose and reduced NBT. Reduced NBT is seen as dark blue crystals. Source: Regenstrief Institute
Nitroblue tetrazolium test investigates neutrophil function following recurrent bacterial infections especially when chronic granulomatous disease is suspected. Does not differentiate bacterial infections from nonbacterial infections. In chronic granulomatous disease neutrophils are unable to reduce the Nitro blue dye which correlates with their ability to kill bacteria. Source: Regenstrief Institute
