Version 2.78

Description

Poikilocytosis are abnormally shaped red blood cells (RBC) sometimes seen on blood smears of humans and many wild and domestic animals. They are more common in some apparently normal small ruminants, particularly goats. Normal RBC are round, flattened disks that are thinner in the middle than at the edges, whereas a poikilocyte is either a distortion of that normal shape or an entirely different shape. Generally, poikilocytosis refers to an increase in abnormal RBC of any shape where they make up 10% or more of the total red cell population. Poikilocytosis is a rather general condition rather than a specific one. Copyright Text is available under the Creative Commons Attribution/Share-Alike License.
