Ziprasidone
Active
Description
Ziprasidone, a benzisothiazoylpiperazine derivative, has combined dopamine and serotonin receptor antagonist activity, and is structurally related to tiospirone. It is an atypical antipsychotic agent used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia. It is also used to treat episodes of mania, or mixed episodes (symptoms of mania and depression that happen together) in patients with bipolar disorder. Ziprasidone is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of behavior problems in older adults with dementia as taking antipsychotics such as ziprasidone increases the risk of stroke or death during treatment for those patients.
