Version 2.77

Description

A ganglioside molecule consists of a glycosphingolipid (ceramide and oligosaccharide) with one or more sialic acid residues linked to the sugar chain. Molecules with one sialic acid residue are called monosialogangliosides (GM), those with two are called disialogangliosides (GD), and those with three are trisialogangliosides (GT). Gangliosides without any sialic acid residues are called asialogangliosides, while those that do not have a ceramide N-acyl group are called lysogangliosides. The number that typically is included at the end of the name indicates the order in which the molecule was discovered. For example, GM2 is a ganglioside with one sialic acid residue that was the second GM to be identified. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
