Description

Cefuroxime (brand names Ceftin, Zinacef, Supacef) is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic resistant to beta-lactamase and used to treat infections caused by gram-negative and gram-positive organisms. Free cefuroxime is the non-protein bound form of cefuroxime in the blood. Bound cefuroxime constitutes 33 to 50% of circulating cefuroxime. PMID: 2393271 Cefuroxime levels are measured for therapeutic drug monitoring and to avoid toxicity. Blood levels of cefuroxime can be reduced by dialysis. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
