Description

Plastic surgery is a specialty that uses surgical techniques to improve the appearance and function of patients' bodies (Johnson D. Whitworth IH. Recent developments in plastic surgery. [Review] [24 refs] [Journal Article. Review] BMJ. 325(7359):319-22, 2002 Aug 10). Some of these operations are called cosmetic, and others - including nearly all of the operations that plastic surgeons themselves hold as the highest achievements within their profession, are called reconstructive. Descriptions of plastic surgery aimed towards a lay audience that depict reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic plastic surgery as two entirely different fields within a broader surgical specialty are misleading. A facelift performed to tighten the normal skin of a seventy-year old is called a cosmetic surgery procedure because it is only aimed to provide beauty.
