Atomoxetine
Active
Description
Atomoxetine, brand name Strattera, is a nonstimulant noradrenaline uptake inhibitor and is effective in treating patients with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Atomexetine can be taken either as a daily or twice daily medication and has a low potential for abuse, which is useful for patients who have a history of substance abuse as well as patients who have comorbid anxiety or tics. It is also useful for patients who do not want to take a controlled substance as Atomexetine is not a controlled substance in the United States. Atomoxetine is rapidly absorbed, and has a high affinity and selecivity to inhibit norepinephrine uptake. It also binds to areas with high distributions of noradrenergic neurons. Common side effects of Atomoxetine are mild to moderate headache, abdominal pain, decreased appetite, vomiting, somnolence, and nausea. PMID: 18399707 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
