Staphylococcus aureus.methicillin resistant
Active
Description
Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a staph infection that is resistant to multiple antibiotics. MRSA frequently causes skin infections, but can also cause pneumonia and, if untreated, can lead to sepsis. MRSA is spread when a person comes in contact with an infected wound or by sharing personal items with a person infected with MRSA. The risk of infection is increased in crowded spaces such as gyms, daycare centers, military bases, and patients being treated as inpatients in medical facilities. Studies have shown that one in three people are asymptomatic carriers of staph in their nose and that two people in 100 are carriers of MRSA. To prevent contracting MRSA, maintain good personal hygiene by frequently hand washing and bathing often, especially after exercise. Keep scrapes and open wounds covered and get medical attention for skin infections. MRSA infection of the skin may initially resemble a spider bite, but can become red, swollen, painful, warm to the touch, filled with pus, and accompanied by a fever.[https://www.cdc.gov/mrsa/index.html] Source: Regenstrief LOINC
