F10 gene
Active
Description
The F10 gene encodes for factor X, a vitamin K-dependent protein of the blood coagulation cascade synthesized in the liver. Factor X is the first component of the final common coagulation pathway and is activated to Xa by factor IXa (intrinsic pathway) or factor VIIa (extrinsic pathway). The activated factor Xa is then involved in cleaving prothrombin into active thrombin. Mutations in the F10 gene cause a rare bleeding disorder of variable severity known as factor X deficiency, with severe cases resulting from homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations, and mild /moderate cases are more commonly heterozygous. Clinical presentations range from nose bleeds, menorrhagia or post-surgical bleeding in the mild cases to hematuria, hematomas, Gi bleeding, bleeding into joints or tissues in more severe cases. Unlike the X-linked hemophilias, F10 is located on chromosome 13 so occurs equally in both sexes. Treament involves factor replacement. PMID: 30507709 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
