Description

Aripiprazole (brand name Abilify) is in the atypical antipsychotics drug class and used to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia in adults and teenagers. Other uses include; treatment for episodes of mania or mixed episodes in adults, teenagers, and children 10 years of age and older with bipolar disorder, as an antidepressant to treat depression when symptoms cannot be controlled by the antidepressant alone, and to treat children 6 to 17 years of age who have autistic disorder. Aripiprazole is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment in older adults with dementia as there is an increased chance of stroke or death during treatment.
