Descriptions

Iodide is the ionic form (+2) of iodine, and is found in several products such as eye drops and antiseptics used in surgery, but is not a common suicide or homicide agent. Most poisonings are accidental. Source: Regenstrief Institute

Iodide (I-) is an ion. Iodine (I2) is the form found in nature and is an essential nutrient in the diet. The submittor of this term t use ion chromatography with an ion-specific electrode that is only sensitive to the charged I- atom. Therefore, they will not detect Iodine (I2) in the sample. Note however that when iodine is ingested it gets converted to iodide as it is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (from Goodman & Gillman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics., 9th ed) so ingested and digested idodine will be detected. Pur iodien is in a biological sample for any other reason (e.g., topical antiseptic) the electrode will be blind to it. Source: NMS labs
