Bactericidal permeability increasing protein Ab
Active
Description
BPI is a human protein that does show bactericidal activity against gram-negative bacteria, but the measurement of antibody against this protein is related to the fact that it is a target of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies(ANCA). These (BPI-ANCA) antibodies have been found in a number of inflammatory disorders (particularly as a marker for inflammatory bowel disease) and also in autoimmune diseases such as SLE and RA. There has been some association of BPI Ab with higher inflammatory activity in these disorders although a role in pathogenesis remains unclear. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
