Smooth muscle Ab
Active
Description
Actin antibodies-also known as smooth muscle antibodies-and antimitochondrial antibodies should be evaluated in the differential diagnosis of chronic liver disease. The presence of smooth muscle antibodies is indicative of type 1 or 3 autoimmune hepatitis, whereas antimitochondrial antibodies at high titers are more often associated with primary biliary cirrhosis. Smooth muscle antibodies belong to IgG or IgM classes of immunoglobulins and are directed against F-actin which is present in all smooth muscle fibers.
