Ercalcidiol
Active
Descriptions
Naturally occuring Vitamin D (diet, dermal synthesis) is biologically inactive and requires enzymatic conversion to active metabolites. In the liver, Vitamin D is converted to 25-hydroxyvitamin D, the major circulating form of vitamin D, and then to 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, the active form of vitamin D. 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in turn binds to the intracellular vitamin D receptor. Ercalcidiol, 25-hydroxycalciferol, or 25-hydroxyvitamin D2, is the the product of hydroxylation of Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) in the liver. Vitamin D2 is derived from fungal and plant sources. Source: Regenstrief Institute
