Tauroursodeoxycholate
Active
Descriptions
Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) is a secondary bile acid. It is produced in the liver when ursodeoxycholic acid is conjugated to taurine. TUDCA has cytoprotective properties and is used to treat chronic liver diseases associated with cholestasis. It also may have neuroprotective effects and is a potential therapy for neurodegenerative conditions such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. PMID: 25664595 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
Bile acids (BAs) are conjugated to either taurine or glycine. Various disorders are associated with different BA profiles. Alcoholic cirrhosis has been associated with extremely high levels of the taurine-conjugated BAs taurocholate, taurochenodeoxycholate, and tauroursodeoxycholate, moderately elevated levels of glycine-conjugated BAs, including glycocholate, glycochenodeoxycholate, and glycoursodeoxycholate, and mild elevation of nonconjugated BAs (cholate, chenodeoxycholate).
