Taurolithocholate
Active
Description
Lithocholic acid (LCA) is the secondary bile acid (BA) formed from chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA). Taurolithocholic acid (TLC) is also a secondary BA, which is formed from conjugation of LCA with taurine. BAs act as signaling molecules and affect macrophage cytokine expression. TLC is a strong agonist of TGR5, which is a G-protein coupled BA receptor expressed on macrophages. TLC modulates macrophages that are induced by lipopolysaccharide, which may contribute to the impaired response to bacterial and viral infections in patients with cholestasis.
