Description

11-oxygenated C19 (11oxC19) steroids are produced in the adrenal gland. 11oxC19s include 11-Hydroxytestosterone (11-OHT) and 11-Ketotestosterone (11-KT). 11-OHT is formed from testosterone, and 11-KT is formed from 11-OHT. 11-KT is a potent androgen and binds to the human androgen receptor AR. Various 11oxC19 steroids, including 11-OHT and 11-KT, are emerging as potentially useful biomarkers in patients with endocrine disorders such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia, polycystic ovary syndrome, androgen-dependent and androgen-producing tumors, and premature adrenarche. Specifically, higher than normal levels of 11oxC19 steroids have been found in patients with 21-hydroxylase deficiency and in polycystic ovary syndrome. The 11oxC19 steroids are also thought to increase progression of castration-resistant prostate cancer, and might have clinical implications in adrenarche and postmenopausal women.
