Version 2.78

Description

Cronobacter sakazakii, previously named Enterobacter sakazakii, ia a Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria that is able to survive for long periods of time in a variety of environments, including dry foods and sewer water.[CDC: Cronobacter] C. sakazakii infections are rare but when present can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and severe bacteremia and meningitis. It is most commonly isolated from infants and the elderly patients. PMID: 11307587 Cronobacter can be detected by phenotypic assays (e.g. α-glucosidase assays) or genotypic methods (e.g. PCR targeting dnaG and gluA genes), which were found to be more sensitive and specific.
