Fusobacterium is a genus of anaerobic, Gram-negative, non-sporulating organisms commonly found in oropharyngeal, gastrointestinal and genital tracts.[NCBI Books: NBK8438] Within the genus, the two most commonly isolated pathogens in clinical specimens are F. nucleatum (61%) followed by F. necrophorum (25%). PMID: 23734900 F. necrophorum is the most virulent and may cause severe infections, such as pharyngotonsillitis, jugular vein septic thrombophlebitis, and general sepsis particularly in children and young adults.
