Description

Human neutrophil peptides (HNPs), also known as alpha defensins, are antimicrobial peptides released by activated neutrophils in response to infection. HNP-1 and HNP-2 are encoded by the DEFA1 gene, and HNP-3 is encoded by DEFA3 gene. All three peptides are nearly identical; they only differ by the first amino acid in their sequence. HNPs have antibacterial, fungicide and antiviral activities. PMID: 15616305 They have been extensively studied as a biomarker in various diseases such as infections, atherosclerosis, rheumatic diseases, preeclampsia, and cancer. PMID: 16513165 PMID: 19186224 PMID: 25196784 HNP synovial fluid proteins are used as a diagnostic biomarker for periprosthetic joint infection (PJI). PMID: 31856885 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
