Description

Sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene is commonly used for taxonomic classification and identification of bacteria. The 16S gene is approximately 1500bp long and is universal in bacteria, allowing its relationships to be measured among all bacteria. Because it is universal among all bacteria, detection of 16S RNA can also be used to estimate bacterial load. The 16S sequence has a role in identifying bacteria that are atypical or rare that are unable to be identified by phenotypic tests alone. In general there is not enough variation in 16S sequence for its use in distinguishing strains for epidemiological purposes. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
