Description

Azaleas are flowering shrubs and subgenus of Rhododendrons. They contain a toxic compound, andromedotoxin (grayanotoxin), in the leaves and nectar, that is poisonous to humans and animals. The toxin can also be present in honey made from the nectar and is known as "mad honey" and causes "mad honey disease". Consumption of andromedotoxin-containing leaves, flowers or honey may cause symptoms ranging from dizziness, hypotension, and atrial-ventricular block. PMID: 22528814 Source: Regenstrief LOINC
