Description

Galantamine is a tertiary alkaloid acetylcholinesterase inhibitor drug used to treat patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). PMID: 11129124 Patients with AD have deficiencies in the production of acetylcholine, which is essential to attention and consciousness. These deficiencies are due to neuronal death, decreased choline acetyl transferase synthesis (the primary enzyme needed to produce acetylcholine), and neuroimmunological responses. The use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitor drugs reduces the breakdown of acetylcholine in patients with AD and markedly improves their cognitive abilities. PMID: 18693233 However, they are not known to cure AD or prevent the loss of cognitive abilities in the future. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
