Description
Tocilizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody against the interleukin-6 receptor being used to treat patients with COVID-19 pneumonia. Such patients are in danger of developing a hyperimmune response known as a cytokine storm which is characterized by an increased production of cytokines. The cytokines cause damage and lung tissue fibrosis that can last an extensive amount of time. The current treatment for COVID-19 includes the use of anti-viral and immunomodulatory drugs, including tocilizumab. Tocilizumab is also used to treat severe rheumatoid arthritis, systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis, giant cell arteritis, and life-threatening cytokine release syndrome induced by chimeric antigen receptor T cell therapy.https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanrhe/article/PIIS2665-9913(20)30173-9/fulltext Source: Regenstrief LOINC
