Description
An elastic fiber is composed of elastin and fibrillin-containing microfibrils. Elastic fibers are a key part of the extracellular matrix in the respiratory system and play a major role in lung development. They are essential for lung elasticity and recoil, and help with equal transmission of mechanical forces throughout the lungs.
