Curschmann's spirals & crystals
Active
Description
Spirals are mucosal formations of various sizes. They are formed when the bronchi spasm and the presence of mucus in them. During coughing, viscous mucus is ejected into the lumen of the large bronchi, twisting in a spiral. Crystals are formed from the decay of eosinophils, so they can not always be detected in freshly separated sputum, despite the presence of eosinophils.
