Active
Description
Opioids refer to all natural, semisynthetic, and synthetic morphine-like drugs. Naturally occurring opiates including morphine and codeine are found in the resin of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). IgE-mediated opioid hypersensitivities are rare and many reactions are caused by direct mast cell degranulation. Codeine is a prodrug that is converted into morphine via the hepatic cytochrome P-450 2D6 (CYP2D6) pathway, creating share similar rates of allergy for both PMID: 28550985. Source: Regenstrief LOINC
