ArticleRegenstrief LOINCGranulocyte-monocyte colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is an important cytokine that impacts the activation pathways of monocytes, macrophages, dendritic cells and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes. PMID: 9825845 GM-CSF has many beneficial properties including to regulate differentiated white blood cell function, to stimulate macrophages to fight infection and tumors, and to assist the healing and repair of fibroblasts and epidermal cells. In addition, GM-CSF regulates the growth and function of dendritic cells that are key to inducing a primary T cell immune response. GM-CSF is used to treat neutropenia secondary to cytotoxic chemotherapy and bone marrow and hemopoietic stem cell transplantation. Future uses may include enhancing antibody responses to antimicrobial vaccines, assisting in fighting intracellular microorganisms, speeding up wound healing, and providing protective immunity against tumors.
