| Article | Regenstrief LOINC | Macrophage inflammatory protein 1 alpha (MIP-1 alpha) is chemotactic cytokine that is a member of the CC subfamily of chemokines. It is secreted by macrophages that are typically increased in areas of inflammation and bone resorption. MIP-1 alpha attracts other macrophages, lymphocytes, and eosinophils by way of the CCR1 and CCR5 receptors present on the surface of macrophages. Also, MIP-1 alpha promotes wound healing, inhibits stem cells, and maintains effector immune responses. MIP-1 alpha plays an influential pathogenic role in diseases that are associated with inflammation and bone resorption including periodontitis, multiple myeloma, Sjogren syndrome, and rheumatoid arthritis. MIP-1 alpha may be used as a biomarker for inflammatory diseases in the future. PMCID: PMC7124056 |
