| Article | Regenstrief LOINC | C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2), also known as monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 (MCP-1), is a chemokine that is produced by a number of cell types including endothelial, fibroblasts, epithelial, smooth muscle, mesangial, astrocytic, monocytic, and microglial cells. MCP-1 secretion leads to the selective recruitment of monocytes, neutrophils, and lymphocytes. MCP-1 modulates the movement and infiltration of monocytes, memory T lymphocytes, and natural killer cells where they monitor normal immunological processes, respond to inflammation, and eliminate viral infections. In addition to the homeostatic role of MCP-1, it is also implicated in a number of disease processes including multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and more.
