| Article | Regenstrief LOINC | 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) is a small organic acid that is absorbed in the small intestine where it produces local immunosuppression. 5-ASA has been in use for over 30 years for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and has also proven to be highly effective, safe, and well-tolerated for the treatment of mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC), proctitis, and arthritis. For patients with IBD, commitment to long-term therapy is necessary to reduce the occurrence of incapacitating flare ups in the short term and the development of colon cancer in the long term.
