Cholesterol.esterified
Active
Description
Cholesterol exists either in the nonesterfied (free, unesterified) form or in the esterified form, in which a fatty acid is bound to the hydroxyl group of cholesterol by an ester bond. Non-esterified cholesterol is essential for remodeling neuronal plasma membranes. Typically about 50% of the excreted cholesterol is reabsorbed by the small bowel back into the bloodstream. Cholesterol esterification is significant because it allows to enhance lipids transport capability of lipoproteins from plasma and prevents free cholesterol intracellular toxicity.
